UNP Decides General Election Should Be Held After April 23

United National Party Working Committee unanimously approved the decision to hold a general election after April 23, UNP Media Spokesman and Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam stated a short while ago.

Kariyawasam spoke to media outside party headquarters at Sirikotha in Pitakotte,  immediately after the meeting of the Working Committee.

Kariyawasam added that the government had promised to hold a general election after the completion of the 100 Days Program and the UNP took a strong decision to carry out that promise.

However, the president has the power to dissolve the parliament on a date before its tenure is completed.
