Parliament To Be Dissolved Following 19th, 20th Amendments

Sri Lanka Freedom Party parliamentary team decided that the parliament should be dissolved only after 19th Amendment and 20th Amendment are both approved.

This decision was taken last evening when the parliamentary team met with President Maithripala Sirisena.

SLFP has been maintaining that both the amendments to the executive presidency and electoral system should be carried out simultaneously. The 19th Amendment to the Constitution reduces the powers of the executive presidency. However, there is nothing on the electoral reforms in this bill. Electoral reforms are expected to be introduced through a 20th Amendment.

The 19th Amendment will be debated on April 21 and 22 in parliament.

President Maithripala Sirisena earlier told that the parliament will be dissolved following the approval of the 19th Amendment. However, there is still no agreement on electoral reform. SLFP recently propose a system which was vehemently opposed by the smaller parties.
