Police Refute Rajapaksa's Allegations: 'FCID Follows Routine Procedure'

Police on Thursday dismissed former president Mahinda Rajapaksa’s allegation that the Financial Crimes Investigations Division has become an extension of the UNP, adding that FCID follows the usual procedure.

Speaking to Asian Mirror, Police Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara pointed out that the FCID was usually submitting a B-report to the Magistrate’s Courts before commencing an investigation, or while an investigation is being carried out. It is nothing strange for the police to do so, he added.

Gunasekara was commenting on the allegation by Rajapaksa that FCID had already filed a B-report on an investigation. Releasing a statement earlier this afternoon, Rajapaksa said that “FCID has filed a B report informing the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court that they have begun investigations into a complaint that a sum totalling USD 48 million invested in the Steel Corporation and a sum of USD 190 million invested in the Marion hotel in Dubai  actually  belongs  to  me  and  that  the  owner  of  these  properties  Nandana  Lokuvithana  is only  a  front  man”.

Rajapaksa also said that the FCID was conducting inquiries on an anonymous complaint. Gunasekara said that the complaint was filed by a group calling itself the Oruwala Steel Former Employers Union, but there was no name mentioned. However, the FCID will investigate the matter, he said.

He further stated that the complaint was regarding the purchase of the Oruwala Steel Factory by a local in 2009. The allegation on the hotel in Dubai was also part of the same complaint, he added.
