Mayor of Hambanthota Eraj Fernando, who chased after the vehilce carrying UNP MPs brandishing a gun yesterday, has stated that he went to rescue the UNP Parliamentarians from unruly crowds. 

Speaking to reporters after the incident, the mayor had said he went to the location after he heard that more than 100 people were behaving in an inappropriate manner expressing their anger at the fact finding visit by the UNP MPs.

The mayor had said he brandished a gun to protect UNP MPs from unruly protesters. "UNP MP Ajith Mannapperuma who visited Hambanthota yesterday is my good friend," the Hambanthota Mayor also added. 

When asked about the mayor's remarks, a UNP Parliamentarian told Asian Mirror that his explanation was nothing but frivolous. "His answer is similar to that of the man who climbed the kitul tree," he said.

Meanwhile, Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana told Asian Mirror that a comprehensive investigation into the incident was underway under instructions of DIG Gamini Mathurata. The Spokesman said Police were investigating into the behaviour of Hambanthota Mayor Eraj Fernando and the inaction of Police when the tense situation occured.  (Pic courtesy: Daily Mirror)
