Ossie Abeygoonasekera's Son Enters Politics From UNP

Asanga Abeygoonasekera, son of late Ossie Abeygoonasekera, signed nomination papers to contest the General Election from the Gampaha District under the UNP ticket.

A past pupil of Ananda College, Asanga Abeygoonasekera is a member of the Insurance Board of Sri Lanka. He held several posts in the government and was the former Executive Director of Lakshman Kadirgarmar Institute of International Releations and Strategic Studies until recently.

His father Ossie Abeygoonasekera was a childhood friend of actor turned politician Vijaya Kumaratunga. In 1988, Ossie Abeygoonasekera contested in the Presidential Election under the Mahajana Party ticket and received over 4 percent of the vote. He later joined the UNP. On October 24, 1994, he was injured by a suicide bombing which claimed the life of UNP Presidential candidate Gamini Dissanayake, and succumbed in early November.
