AG To Retire On January 09: Wijeyadasa Pushing Suhada Gamlath As New AG

December 30, 2015

Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapaksa is likely to nominate Solicitor General Suhada Gamlath as the new Attorney General, Justice Ministry sources told Asian Mirror.

Current Attorney General Yuwanjana Wanasundara is to retire from service on January 09. The current Attorney General,  who was appointed during the tenure of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa,  has not sought a service extension.

According to the standard procedure, the Justice Minister has to recommend the name of a suitable candidate to the President to be appointed as the new Attorney General.

Gamlath, who led the inquiry into Avant Garde private security firm from the AG department, has a close connection with Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, Ministry sources further added.

They further added that Gamlath was one step ahead of Dayantha Jayasuriya,  another potential candidate for the position, in terms of seniority.

However,  some sections of the legal fraternity are claiming that Jayasuriya should be appointed as the new Attorney General as he is an official with an unblemished track record.
