Athulathmudali's Party To Return To Active Politics

December 16, 2016

The Democratic United National Front, once led by former Minister Lalith Athulathmudali, is planning to come to active politics once again.

The party is planning to contest the forthcoming local government elections and the provincial council elections.

The DUNF was formed in late 1991 following the impeachment attempt on the then President Ranasinghe Premadasa. The rebel UNP MPs led by Lalith Athulathmudali and Gamini Dissanayake were expelled from the UNP. Eight UNP MPs filed a petition in the Supreme Court against this move.

Meanwhile their allies took steps to register the party with the leadership of A.C. Gunaratne, a Queen's Counsel. On December 3, 1991, the Supreme Court gave the decision against Athulathmudali and other MPs. Thereafter they officially joined the DUNF.

The party was accepted as a registered political party in January 1992. A year later, Athulathmudali was named leader.

Athulathmudali was assassinated on April 23, 1993, during the provincial council election campaign. Despite his assassination, he received more than 100,000 preferential votes. The 1993 provincial election was the only successful election campaign of the party.

After the assassination of President Ranasinghe Premadasa on May 1, 1993, most DUNF members returned to the UNP.

In 1994, what remained of the DUNF became part of the People's Alliance.

A DUNF candidate, Ariyawansa Dissanayake, contested the 1999 Presidential Election, and received only 4,039 votes.
