Southwest Monsoon: 20, 000 Affected, Over 1,000 Displaced, 6 Deaths Reported: More Than 300mm Rain In Some Areas

 

Inclement weather being experienced around the country as a result of the Southwest monsoon and has claimed the lives of 6 people, displaced over 1, 000 and affected 20, 000 the Disaster Management Ministry (DMC) said.

Rains of over 300mm were reported in some areas – the highest (353.8mm) from Anamaduwa while Andigama and Kamalsram in the Puttalam district recorded 339mm and 302mm respectively.

The heavy rains have caused waters to rise to flood levels in the Kelani River, prompting the DMC to warn residents nearby to evacuate.

Water levels of the Kalu Ganga had also reached Minor Flood level and people were requested to be vigilant and take safety measures.

Meanwhile, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) disconnected power supply to Kuruvita, Elapatha, Eheliyagoda and Kiriella areas, as a precautionary measure due to flooding.
