Shirani Bandaranayake Acquitted From Corruption Case

February 19, 2016

Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya today ordered former CJ Shirani Bandaranayake to be acquitted and released from a case filed against her by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption.

This order was given after the commission informed court that it was not willing to proceed with the case.

Bandaranayake was accused of not declaring her assets and liabilities during the years 2010 to 2012 when she was the Chief Justice.

The defence had argued that this was a politically motivated charge. In January, when the case was taken up, the Magistrate considered the defence arguments and ordered the Bribery Commission to inform if it was willing to proceed with the case.
