'Coal Scam' Resurrected To Silence Ranawaka?

December 18, 2016

Following the threat by Patali Champika Ranawaka to walk out of the government over its inaction to take action against those who are responsible for large scale financial fraud, there is an attempt to bring back the 'coal scam' into the political arena in an attempt to silence him, political sources said.

A press conference has been called on the 'coal scam' under the former government by Attorney-at-Law Namal Rajapaksa. It will be held at 10.00 a.m. in Colombo tomorrow. He has said that details of the scam have been revealed by FCID investigations and these details will be revealed at the press conference.

It is not known as to how they have come to possession of details of the findings of the FCID.

Ranawaka was first accused of the coal scam in late 2014 by the then Minister of Power and Energy Pavithra Wanniarachchi. However, following a response from Ranawaka, Wanniarachchi quietly dropped the case.

The latest move is said to have the backing of strong groups within the government, who are angry at Ranawaka over his criticism at the government's inaction to take action on the Central Bank bond scam. The Sirisena - Wickremesinghe government is yet to take meaningful action against those responsible.
