Deputy Minister of Social Empowerment and Welfare Ranjan Ramanayake lashed out at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Saudi Arabia, claiming that it has to bear the responsibility for the death sentence given to a Sri Lankan woman by the Saudi courts.
”The woman was charged in April, 2014 and was convicted in April, 2015. However the embassy was not aware of it until they were concluded. Therefore embassy has not given any advice regarding the incident”, said Ramanayake.
He also emphasized that if the officials had informed her not to plead guilty, the situation would have been altered in her favour.
