Though according to Joint Director of Fisheries, Nagapattinam, Amal Xavier, the two fishermen from Karaikal district in Puducherry were part of a large group of fishermen who had ventured into the sea in more than 100 boats last evening, from Karaikal and Nagapattinam district in Tamil Nadu.
Nevertheless ToI reported that AIADMK MPs on Thursday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged him to summon the Sri Lankan high commissioner to India and convey strong protest against the incident.
The fishermen set out for fishing on a mechanised fishing vessel from Karaikal fishing harbour a few days ago. While they were fishing in their traditional waters, the Sri Lankan navy fired indiscriminately at their boats, injuring A Aravinthan (20) of Nagapattinam and R Dinesh of Puducherry. The duo, who sustained bullet injuries, were admitted to hospital in Puducherry.
