The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has taken legal action against seven individuals, including five employees of the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT), in connection with the illegal registration of approximately 400 vehicles.
The CIABOC disclosed that these vehicles were registered without proper clearance from Sri Lanka Customs, resulting in a significant loss of revenue for the state. In a statement, the commission revealed that further investigations uncovered details about 156 of the vehicles, with several being identified as 'luxury vehicles.'
A court order obtained by the CIABOC mandates the transfer of seven of these vehicles to Sri Lanka Customs from their current owners. To comply with the order, five of the seven vehicles have already been handed over to authorities.
