Actress Damitha Abeyratne Alleges Unlawful Arrest, Files Complaint with HRCSL

Sri Lankan actress Damitha Abeyratne has lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL), asserting that her rights were violated during an alleged wrongful arrest.

Abeyratne and her spouse were apprehended by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on April 04 on suspicion of involvement in a financial fraud case. They were subsequently released on bail on April 24, following a ruling by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.
The CID's Computer Crimes Division is investigating claims that the couple defrauded Rs. 3 million under the guise of offering employment opportunities in South Korea. Abeyratne, however, contends that her affiliation with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) political party led to unwarranted actions against her.
