Sri Lanka Becomes First in South Asia to Grant Free Land Ownership

President Ranil Wickremesinghe announced Sri Lanka's pioneering initiative to provide free land rights to its citizens, marking it as the first South Asian nation to do so. The confirmation of land rights was emphasized as a key to ensuring avenues for progress and stability for the people.

During a ceremony held on May 24th, President Wickremesinghe distributed 1,286 freehold deeds to residents of the Jaffna district. This event, part of the "Heritage" program, covered all 15 Divisional Secretariat divisions within the district. The President urged recipients to preserve these deeds for future generations.

Under the "Urumaya" program, a further 13,858 freehold deeds will be distributed across the Northern Province, including the Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, and Mannar districts.
