Three International Universities to Start Operations in Sri Lanka: State Minister Unveils Ambitious Plans to Transform Higher Education

February 15, 2024

State Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Suren Raghavan, has unveiled comprehensive plans to introduce multiple degree programs through state universities. The announcement was made during a press briefing held at the Presidential Media Center on February 14th, under the theme of "Collective Path to a Stable Country."

Drawing upon insights from international education experts, Dr. Raghavan outlined the government's vision, which includes the establishment of three international universities within the country.

Of these, two are currently in the establishment phase, with the third slated to commence operations by May of this year. Notably, the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology is set to open its doors in Kandy, while the other two universities will feature branches affiliated with institutions from the United States and the United Kingdom.

Moreover, discussions are underway to form the new Higher Education Development Commission, chaired by former Chief Justice K. Sri Pawan. This commission will focus on integrating recommendations from the Wijedasa Rajapaksa Committee and the Committee Report of the University Grants Commission, with the aim of refining the legal framework governing higher education and presenting the draft to Parliament.
Addressing concerns surrounding the private higher education sector, Dr. Raghavan emphasized the importance of regulation while reassuring the public that there are no intentions to commercialize education. To further bolster collaboration and exchange, the Australian Higher Education Minister, along with chancellors from prominent Australian universities, has been invited to Sri Lanka for discussions on the future steps to be taken after assessing the local educational landscape.
