Over 70,000 Police To Be Deployed For Election Duty

A total of 70,549 police officers will be deployed for election duty for the August 17 general election, Police Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said today. 
 
Speaking to the media, Gunasekara also revealed that an additional 4,825 Special Task Force personnel will be deployed to provide security for road blocks, counting centers and mobile patrol units.
 
The police personnel deployed for election duty will report to duty on August 16, Gunasekara said. Two police officers each will be present at the 12,399 polling stations island wide and 2885 police mobile units will also be deployed during the election period.
 
In addition, 161 riot police squads will to be deployed in certain areas of the country in order to maintain peace and order. Meanwhile, a total of 221 road blocks will be in place for additional security.
