Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna MP Vijitha Herath was named as the representative of the Constitutional Council representing minor political parties.

A member has to be named to the council from a party other than the main opposition in Parliament.

TNA leader R. Sampanthan was the minor party representative of the Constitutional Council in the last Parliament. However, the TNA leader is the Opposition Leader of the current Parliament.

Herath is the sixth member to be named for the Constitutional Council. The Speaker, the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader are members of the council along with the President's representative Patali Champika Ranawaka and the Prime Minister's representative Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe.
