One Year After Meeriyabedda Landslide, 64 Families Still Displaced

Exactly a year after a deadly landslide hit Meeriyabedda, Haldummulla in the Badulla District, 64 families still remain displaced.

These families are currently living in the Mahakanda Tea Factory, Punagala.

The landslide, which struck at around 7.30am on October 29, 2014, was one of the most catastrophic natural disasters recorded from Sri Lanka in recent years.

Although only 16 bodies of the dead were recovered, nearly 200 were reported missing. An exact number of casualty figures could not be determined since the records of the residents were also lost.

Clothes, bags and other items are still being recovered from the site of the landslide.
