Attorney General To Leave Office In January

November 13, 2015

Attorney General Yuwanjana Wanasundera is to return in January, next year, Attorney General's Department's sources said.

The AG has decided not to seek an extension of service, sources close to Wanasundara told Asian Mirror.

Wanasundera was appointed as the Attorney General by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The AG, the chief legal officer of the government, is now at the centre of a controversy over his department's inaction on several high profile anti-corruption investigations.

However, the Attorney General's Department sources said it could not take further action on certain cases due to discrepancies in initial investigations carried out by Police.

It is speculated among political circles that Wanasundera will be summoned before the Judicial Oversight Committee of Parliament in January to seek explanation on the AG department's position over several anti-corruption investigations.
