Good Governance Activists Demand Hirunika Premachandra's Arrest: "MP Usurped Police Powers!"

December 23, 2015

Good governance activists have called for the arrest of UNP Parliamentarian Hirunika Premachandra in connection with an alleged abduction of a 26 year old youth in Dematagoda.

The abducted youth, who later turned up at the Dematagoda Police station, had complained that the Parliamentarian threatened him after he was abducted.

U. Priyankara, a drapery store employee, said he was forcibly taken away by six men in a Land Rover Defender, belonging to the Parliamentarian,  on Monday afternoon. The youth was later hospitalised as he was assaulted by the abductors who were close allies of the UNP Parliamentarian.

However, commenting on Monday’s incident, Premachandra said: “It happened due to a personal dispute between a person said to

have been assaulted by one of my supporters. The youth had abducted my supporter’s wife and kept her forcibly. My supporter met me with his two children and explained what took place. I sent all three to the shop where the man works.

“My supporter had asked the man to come out which he refused. The others who went with him brought the man to my party office.

No one assaulted him and he was only advised. I requested him to release the woman and he agreed. Everything was solved.”

Good governance activists, whose views on the matter were wisely shared on social media platforms, said the MP had aided the abduction and usurped powers of law enforcement authorities.

They claim the Police should take stern action against the Parliamentarian over the alleged abduction and assault. Police have already arrested six suspects in connection with the incident.
