President Likely To Pardon Former LTTE Member Convicted Of Attempt On His Life

President Maithripala Sirisena is likely to grant presidential pardon to a former LTTE member who was convicted of his attempted assassination attempt, the Court of Appeal was informed today.

A former LTTE operative, Sivaraja Jenivan alias Mohommadu Sulthan Cader Mohideen a.k.a Senan, was involved in an assassination attempt of Maithripala Sirisena in 2006, when he was the Minister of Mahaweli Development. Jenivan, a resident of the Koviladi area in Jaffna, was taken in to custody while travelling in a bus from Polonnaruwa to Batticaloa on April 23, 2006. On July 3, 2015, he was sentenced to 10 years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) by Polonnaruwa High Court.

Jenivan filed an appeal with the Court of Appeal against the conviction.

However, his lawyer today requested for the withdrawal of the case since his client was likely to be pardoned.

The Court of Appeal allowed for the withdrawal of the case after considering the request.
