University Intake Lower Than In 1990, Claims MP Bimal Rathnayake

The percentage of students who get recruited to state universities has been decreased every year, said Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) PM Bimal Rathnayake.

Rathnayake made this observation yesterday at a press conference of Socialist Students’ Union at JVP headquarters at Pelawatte, Battaramulla.

He said though the number of students who get recruited to universities has been increased, the percentage has decreased every year. Rathnayake pointed out that current percentage is lower than the percentage of student enrollment in universities in 1990.

“The number of universities has been increased since 2005, but they do not have enough space. Government has not established a new state university in past few years. However, the government must establish new universities and increase the percentage of students enrolled. Only such move can give justice to students”, said Rathnayake.

“Standards of private universities are unsatisfying. Therefore, 40% - 50% of students should be recruited to state universities”, Rathnayake added.
