Principal of Thurstan College B. A. Abeyratne is likely to be appointed as the new principal of the Royal College, replacing Upali Gunasekara.

Gunasekara has been transferred to Ministry of Education with immediate effect.

Abeyratne was transferred to the Ministry of Education as the Chief Director of Sports when he was serving as the principal of Ananda College.

Abeyrathe's removal from Ananda College led to a series of students' protests in 2005. The Ministry decided to remove Abeyrathne following a number of corruption charges. 

Later, Abeyratne was exoneration from the charges against him.  

He was recently appointed Principal of Thurstan College.

Gunasekara served as the principal of Royal College for a period of 12 years from 2003.
