Rajapaksa Brothers Meet Local Councilors: Possible Move For New Front

Former President and current Kurunegala District MP Mahinda Rajapaksa met with some Local Government Councilors of Kurunegala District at the residence of Western Provincial Councilor D. B. Herath at Wariyapola yesterday.

Former Minister Basil Rajapaksa was also present at the meeting.

Speaking to the media, Rajapaksa demanded the government to hold the Local Government Elections without delay. If not, the government must at least reinstate the dissolved LG bodies, he said.

The meeting with local councilors comes amidst speculations that the Rajapaksa camp of the SLFP and several other constituent parties of the UPFA were planning to launch a new political front. Mahinda Rajapaksa is yet to personally commit himself to such a front in public. However, he has hinted that SLFP members who support him will launch a new front if they are left with no alternative.

Basil Rajapaksa, who was a powerful figure under the presidency of his brother, also said recently that he is willing to support an alternative front. However, he refused speculations that he will be at the helm of the leadership of such an alternative political movement.
