Proposal Calls For Removal Of Lion Symbol From National Flag

February 12, 2016

A proposal to remove the lion symbol from the national flag was submitted to the Constitutional Reforms Committee during its meetings with the public in Mannar.

The Mannar Women's Association made this request when the committee convened at the District Secretariat in Mannar.

The Women's Association argued that the lion symbolizes only the Sinhalese community of the country. A symbol representing all communities should replace the lion, the proposal said.
