Joint Opposition Resolved To Fight For Recognition In Parliament

The joint opposition said that they would continue to struggle at the parliament, if they would not receive a positive response at the party leaders’ meeting today, headed by the Speaker Karu Jayasuriya.

UPFA MP Dinesh Gunawardena told local media that the Joint Opposition would decide on the next step to be taken, following the meeting of party leaders today.

Meanwhile, the parliamentary debate regarding the appointment of a constitutional council for the preparation of a new constitution, will start today. The debate will be held today and tomorrow. A proposal with 33 points was presented to the parliament by the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The proposal suggests that the Speaker should be appointed as the chairman of the constitutional council. The debates to set the suggestion in motion was shelved several times due to conflicts between parties.
