No Elections This Year, Says State Minister Abeywardena

There will be no elections this year, State Minister of Finance Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said today, indicating that the local government elections will also not be held this year.

Speaking at a press conference, he said that the Delimitation Commission has to complete its work since there are a large number of complaints on the delimitation that has already been done.

Most of the local councils are currently under the supervision of a special commissioner since their terms have expired. The terms of other local councils will expire on March 31.

The 'Joint Opposition' is demanding the government to hold the election immediately.
