Its Not A Draft Of New Constitution - Dr. Jayampathi Wickremarathne

Parliamentarian Dr. Jayampathi Wickremarathne says that the report which is scheduled to be submitted to the steering committee of the parliament next month is not a draft of the new constitution.

Dr. Wickremarathne was speaking at a media briefing held in Colombo yesterday.

He also said that the clause in the constitution over the religion should be remained as it is.

Dr. Wickremarathne explained that as per the clause Sri Lanka does not have a state religion.

The most valuable thing is to make the Sri Lankan society more democratic. It was the hope of the people at the January 8 transformation.

The SLFP also passed a proposal on a new constitution at the party summit which was held in Kurunegala. The parliamentarian stressed that a new constitution should be formulated in a democratic framework.

It has to be endorsed by a referendum in the country.

He further points out that this is a a golden opportunity has occurred to introduce a new constitution to the country. He added that the majority of the Lanka Samasamaja party stands by a new constitution that ensures unitary status of the country. He added that power should be devolved to provincial councils and local government bodies.

Taking such measures governance can be made familiar with the general public.

Dr. Wickremarathne said that as the two major parties have joined their hands for governing the country passage of the new constitution would not be a tedious work.
