Muslim Women Activists Report Death Threats

November 19, 2016

Muslim Women's Activists Organization Chairperson in Jaffna stated that she and her colleagues have been receiving death threats after speaking out against the Muslim laws on marriage.

Speaking to the media persons, she said that her organization spoke against the minimum age of marriage in Muslim law and against allowing men to enter into several marriages.

The freedom given to Muslim men has given them power over the women, the activists argue. The fact that a man could could take several women as wives has left many women and children without proper support.

The activists say they have lodged complaints with several police stations in the north against the death threats they are receiving over the phone and via social media.
