Frontline Socialist Party Central Committee Member Kumar Gunaratnam was released today from Anuradhapura Prison after serving his term for emigration - immigration law violation.
Gunaratnam was arrested in November 2015 and was sentenced to one year's prison term later.
Gunaratnam was the Trincomalee District leader of the JVP during the 1987-89 insurrection. He broke away with a faction of JVP members in 2011 and later left for Australia.
He returned to the island on January 1, 2015, during the Presidential Election on a tourist visa. His visa expired at the end of January.
The Frontline Socialist Party led a campaign to win back Gunaratnam's right to do politics in Sri Lanka. They have also campaigned for his right to stay in the country and be accepted as a citizen.
The government yesterday said that they have no intention of deporting Gunaratnam.
