UK House of Commons Takes Up Sri Lankan Political Crisis: Calls For Parliament to Be Reconvened Immediately

The political situation in Sri Lanka was taken up at the UK House of Commons today.

Parliamentarian Hugo Swire told the House President Maithripala Sirisena's actions were in direct contravention to the 19th Amendment to the Sri Lankan Constitution.

He said the international community continued to recognise UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as Prime Minister, and called for President Sirisena to recall Parliament as a matter of urgency.

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt told the House they were concerned about the safety of Wickremesinghe.
