Commissioner General Of Prisons Gives Undertaking In Court That No Prisoner Will Be Executed Next Week

The Commissioner General of Prisons gave an undertaking before the Court of Appeal that no prioner would be executed within the next week.

With the undertaking given by the Commissioner General of Prisons, the Court of Appeal decided to hear the case on July 02. The undertaking was given when the Writ petition filed by journalist against the implementation of the death penalty.

The case was taken up today before Court of Appeal Chairman Yasantha Kodagoda and judge Arjuna Obeyesekra.

Meanwhile, the movement to protect prisoners also filed a Fundamental Rights petition in the Supreme Court seeking an order preventing the implementation of the death penalty.

Nine individuals including the Attorney General, the Justice Minister, the Secretary to the Ministry of Justice and the Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka.
