Dr. Palitha Mahipala, Secretary of the Ministry of Health, has initiated an investigation into a troubling incident involving the administration of substandard drugs to cancer patients. The drug in question, 'Rituximab', crucial in treating specific cancer types, has raised serious concerns regarding patient safety.

Addressing the issue, Dr. Mahipala assured the public that such matters would be dealt with sternly, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. Furthermore, he announced an immediate halt to emergency purchases of medicines as a precautionary measure.

Recent disclosures in Sri Lanka's courts revealed that counterfeit Rituximab drugs were distributed to government hospitals. Deputy Solicitor General Lakmini Girihagama informed the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court that the same supplier involved in providing fake Human Immunoglobulin stock was responsible for the fraudulent supply of Rituximab.

The investigation aims to uncover the extent of the substandard drug distribution and hold those responsible accountable for endangering patients' lives. The Ministry of Health reassures the public of its commitment to ensuring the safety and efficacy of medications provided to citizens.
