Railway Department Tackles Locomotive Driver Shortage

The Sri Lanka Railway Department is confronting a critical shortage of 180 locomotive drivers, according to Railway General Manager H.M.K.W. Bandara.
To mitigate the impact on passenger services, the department has initiated the recruitment of retired drivers. As an interim measure, 37 retired drivers have already returned to service, primarily focusing on passenger routes. However, General Manager Bandara emphasized the necessity of long-term solutions, revealing ongoing efforts to recruit new drivers.
The shortage of locomotive drivers has significantly impeded railway operations, prompting urgent action from the department.
