Kumar Gunaratnam Interrogated Over Violating Immigration And Emigration Laws

Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) central committee stalwart Premakumar Gunaratnam was yesterday (28) questioned by the Immigration and Emigration Department on his recent visit to Sri Lanka.

Speaking to media after questioning, Kumar Gunaratnam said that the Immigration Department questioned about his 'purpose’ for visiting Sri Lanka during the time of the Presidential Election.

The Department has reportedly inquired as to how the Politician can engage in election campaigning while staying in the country under tourist visa.

The Immigration and Emigration Department had also Kumar Gunaratnam to come back for another round of questioning today (29).

Gunaratnam, who is an Australian national and a former member of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), arrived in Sri Lanka after the official announcement of the Presidential Election in November.

After arriving in Sri Lanka, Gunaratnam criticized both the ruling party and the common opposition stating that both parties were being ‘unnecessarily competitive’.

However, many political observers were of the view that Gunaratnam's visit was beneficial for the political campaign of former President Rajapaksa as Gunaratnam strongly criticized the JVP.
