Former Minister Imthiaz Bakeer Markar’s son, Fadhil Bakeer Markar is likely to contest the forthcoming General Election from the district of Kandy under the UNP ticket.

An old boy of Ananda College, Colombo, Bakeer Markar received his tertiary education at the London School of Economic and Political Science. He is presently attached to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Fadhil’s father, Imthiaz Bakeer Markar was the former Cabinet Minister of Media, Postal and Telecommunications from 2001 to 2004 and State Minister of Housing from 1989 to 1993. He was also a member of the parliament from the Kalutara District from 1989 to 2004. Bakeer Markar is also a former Vice President of the United National Party.

Meanwhile, a senior spokesman of the UNP told Asian Mirror that the Party had already a decision to field several young professional as "fresh faces" at the forthcoming Parliamentary election.

"An initiative of that nature," he said, "will contribute to change the present political culture of Sri Lanka."
