Lankan-origin Ranil Jayawardena Elected To UK Parliament

Sri Lankan-origin Ranil Jayawardena was elected to UK Parliament from the North East Hampshire Constituency at the 2015 UK Elections.

Jayawardena polled nearly two thirds of the valid votes in the constituency. He received 35,573 votes, which is 65.9 percent of the total valid votes.

His closest rival, Graham Cockarill of the Liberal Democratic Party received only 5657 votes.

North East Hampshire is considered an ultra-safe conservative seat.

Jayawardena came to the limelight several days ago after a video was released showing a rival candidate threatening to kill him. The candidate, Robert Blay of the United Kingdom Independent Party was suspended from the party. However he received 4,732 votes.

Meanwhile, the two other candidates with Sri Lankan ancestry have failed to win their constituencies. Chamali Fernando of Conservative Party came only third in Cambridge constituency and Uma Kumaran came second at Harrow East.
