No-confidence Motion Against PM Should Be Given Top Priority: Gammanpila

Pivithuru Hela Urumaya leader Udaya Gammanpila stated that the parliament should give priority to the no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister before everything else.

Speaking to Asian Mirror, Gammanpila said that according to the parliamentary traditions, when there is a no-confidence motion, especially against the Prime Minister, it is given priority over everything else.

When asked if it will not block the 20th Amendment, Gammanpila said that the 20th Amendment will take at least another three weeks to be debated in parliament, even if no petitions are filed against it at the Supreme Court. Since petitions are likely to be filed, it is likely that the whole process will take at least six weeks, he pointed out.

Gammanpila also said that if this government remains in power for that long the country will be in great danger.

In the event of the Prime Minister losing the no-confidence motion, the best option will be to dissolve the parliament. The people should be given a chance to select their Prime Minister, he pointed out.

He also pointed out that the 20th Amendment is not a task of the government alone. It is a task of the parliament, he said, since the two thirds majority is needed for it. Therefore, even the next parliament can approve it, Gammanpila argued.
