Sobitha Thera Calls For Dissolution Of Parliament If 20th Amendment Gets Delayed

If the 20th Amendment does not receive the approval of most of the parties, the best option will be to dissolve the parliament and get it passed in a new parliament, National Movement for Social Justice Chairman Maduluwawe Sobitha Thera said.

Following a discussion with several minor parties, Sobitha Thera said that the electoral system should not be harmful for any particular community. He expressed his support for the two ballot system promoted by the JVP, SLMC and some other parties.

With the disagreements put forward by the minor parties, the best option will be to withdraw the gazette notification on the 20 th Amendment and reconsider it, Sobitha Thera argued. If that attempt also fails, the parliament must be dissolved, he added.

An attempt could be made in the next parliament to introduce not only a new electoral system but a new constitution as well, Sobitha Thera said.
