Deadlock Ends: Prasanna Given Nominations and Rajapaksa To Sign Nomination Papers

The United People's Freedom Alliance has agreed to give nomination to Western Province Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga to contest under the UPFA ticket at the Parliamentary election.
With the UPFA agreeing to give nominations to Ranatunga, former President Rajapaksa agreed to sign nomination papers to contest from the UPFA.

Highly placed party sources said Rajapaksa was expected to sign nomination papers this morning. Several stalwarts of the pro-Rajapaksa camp, including former Minister Vasudewa Nanayakkara, have already signed nomination papers to contest from the UPFA.

The Western Province Chief Minister's application for nominations was turned down yesterday as two members of his family had already received nominations from the party to contest from Gampaha.

In protest of this decision, Rajapaksa, last night, threatened to field a separate group to contest the election if the party rejected Ranatunga's nominations.
