Constitutional Assembly Resolution Violates Standing Orders: JVP

The resolution presented by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to convert the Parliament into a Constitutional Assembly to draft a new constitution is in violation of Standing Orders, JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said.

Speaking to media yesterday following the special Parliamentary session, he said that he opposed the resolution in Party Leaders' meetings held before the Parliamentary session.

Meanwhile, he also maintained that the country's problems will not be solved by a constitutional reform.

President Maithripala Sirisena pushed for the constitutional change at his special address to the Parliament on Saturday, adding that constitutions need to be changed according to the changing times. He insisted on the need of political reform for lasting reconciliation.
