'Joint Opposition' Files Complaint With Inter-Parliamentary Union On Lack Of Space

The 'Joint Opposition' which supports former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has complained to the Inter-parliamentary Union in Switzerland on the lack of space given to them in the Sri Lankan Parliament.

They have argued that they are given proportionately less time in speeches. Furthermore, they have been deprived of reasonable representation in COPE and other committees, the 'Joint Opposition' has said.

The 'Joint Opposition' also charged that the appointment of MPs through the national list following the August 2015 election was flawed.

Alleging that the conduct of the Speaker is contrary to the traditions followed by his predecessors, the 'Joint Opposition' claimed that Parliamentary Democracy has been threatened due to the present situation.

The 'Joint Opposition' requested a meeting with the officials of the IPU to discuss its grievances.
