Acting IGP Says No Clear Information: Hundreds Of Residents Stranded Due To Transport Problems

Acting IGP S.M. Wickremasinghe says the Police cannot obtain "clear information" on the fire broke out at the Salawa Army Camp, in Kosgama.

"What we know is that the explosions are continuing. Measures have been taken to continue the damage," the Acting IGP said, responding to media queries.

Although residents in the area have been asked to evacuate, hundreds of people are still stranded due to transport problems, our reporters said. A heavy traffic was reported on roads leading to Avissawella, Hanwella and Kaluaggala areas. Electricity lines have also been disrupted due to the fire.

Meanwhile, the military has assured protection for private properties in the area.

Military sources said it did not have exact details of the damage caused by the fire. They said no one had been able to reach the camp as the explosions were continuing.

"It is a chain of explosions. They will have to wait till it ends," a senior Army officer said.

However, the Sri Lanka Air Force had deployed helicopters to observe the situation.
