Sri Lanka Achieves Fiscal Landmark: Government Revenue Exceeds Rs.3 Trillion in 2023, Surpassing Historic Mileston

Sri Lanka has recorded an unprecedented government revenue for the year 2023 surpassed Rs.3 trillion for the first time in its history.

According to official figures released by the government, the total government revenue for 2023 reached Rs.3 trillion, fueled by a robust performance in both tax and non-tax revenue streams. Tax revenue alone accounted for an impressive Rs.2,752 billion, while non-tax revenue contributed an additional Rs.363 billion.

This, a government spokesnan said, reflects the effectiveness of fiscal policies, tax reforms, and economic strategies implemented by the government to bolster revenue generation.

"The diverse sources of income indicate a balanced approach to economic management, with both direct and indirect contributions contributing to the overall fiscal health of the nation,"he added.

One notable highlight is the balance in the primary account, which stands at Rs.52 billion. This marks a historic achievement, representing the highest balance in the primary account in the past 25 years. The surplus in the primary account indicates that the government's income exceeds its non-interest expenditure, a positive sign for sustainable fiscal management.
