Finance Minister Inspects Illegally Imported Containers

Three illegally imported containers were opened at Orugodawatte Container Yard yesterday under the supervision of Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake and officials of the Customs Department.
 
Two of these containers have been imported from India. They contained a total of 15,465 bottles of foreign liquor. The market value of these was estimated to be Rs. 20 million. The government lost Rs. 50 million tax revenue due to illegal import of the two containers, Finance Ministry said.
 
Meanwhile, the third container imported from Dubai had foreign liquor and cigarettes worth Rs 4 million, the Finance Ministry also said. The loss in tax revenue due to the illegal import of this container was estimated at Rs. 13.7 million.
