Protest Held To Urge Action Against Child Abuse, Rape

A protest was held in front of Pettah Railway Station against child abuse and rapes this morning with the participation of several artistes and social activists.

The protest was organized by the civil organization ‘Youth Space for Justice’. The main objective of organizing the protest is urge the Police and other relevant authorities to take necessary steps to find and punish persons who were responsible for recently reported child abuse and rape incidents including the murder of Kotadeniyawa toddler, a convener told Asian Mirror.

He said that a proper legal system should be established in the country if it really wants to prevent child abuse and rapes. Government and relevant authorities must pay their attention about it at least now, he added.

A leaflet distribution campaign was also carried out in order to create awareness on why the public should raise their voices against abuses and harassments, the organizers said.

The convener asserted that they are planning to hold few events and discussions to educate the general public about the psychological aspect of social problems such as child abuse in the future.

Moreover, protesters requested media to be aware of their social responsibility and ethics, when they report such news.
