World's Oldest Working Full-rigged Ship Arrives In Sri Lanka

SS Sorlandet has arrived Colombo while on a two-year circumnavigation according to the Norwegian Embassy.The Ship Sørlandet is the world’s oldest working full-rigged ship.The ship, nicknamed “The Pearl of Norway”, has 27 sails.

The SS Sørlandet is a unique part of the cultural heritage from Norway’s maritime history. Previously, she was a seamen’s training ship for boys, now she is available for adventure cruises for “youth” of all ages.

 She has sailed the oceans of the world for close to 90 years, most of the time as a training ship, hosting students and cadets.The ship also been used as a prison ship during World War II.

SS Sørlandet has 70 students from Norwegian and international high schools on board. During their stay in Colombo they will greet Sri Lankan maritime students.

The ship will be part of several events hosted by the Royal Norwegian Embassy and will end its visit on October 30 to sail for the Maldives.
